This personal injury glossary provides explanations in plain English of a number of technical terms you may encounter in the process of pursuing a personal injury claim.
Indemnity - Where one party agrees to protect another from their financial loss or responsibility. In a claim for personal injury, the use of insurance would “indemnify” the claimant for legal costs.
Inquest - Investigation into the cause of an unexpected death.
Interim payments - An amount of compensation paid by the defendant and received by the claimant whilst the claim is still ongoing. This figure will make up part of any compensation received in full settlement of a claim, and will be reduced from any compensation received at the end of the claim. This money can be requested by either the claimant or the court.
Issue of proceedings - The act of bringing a claim to court when other attempts to settle have failed.
