A Lancashire farm partnership has been fined £80,000 following the tragic death of a 23-year-old. The man suffered fatal head injuries when a tractor tyre exploded whilst he was assisting with its inflation.
The incident occurred in May 2021 at a dairy farm near Preston. The man was helping to re-seat and inflate a large tractor tyre when the inner tube suddenly exploded. The force of the explosion caused severe traumatic head injuries. Despite undergoing skull and brain surgeries in the hospital, he tragically passed away just over a month later.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that the farm had failed to assess and plan the task properly. They also did not implement the necessary safety measures to control the risks associated with inflating large commercial tyres. The risk of explosion was significantly increased due to the poor condition of the tyre, wheel, and inner tube.
The company pleaded guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and was fined £80,000. They were also ordered to pay £8,605 in costs following a hearing at Preston Magistrate’s Court on 4th February 2025.
