NHS staffing shortages causing concern

Lung cancer is responsible for around 35,000 deaths a year in the UK.

The NHS Targeted Lung Health Check Programme aims to diagnose lung cancer earlier in people.   Individuals are sent an invitation letter or phone call to participate if they live in certain areas of England and Wales and are:

  • over the age of 55 years but under 75 years of age;
  • registered with a GP;
  • a smoker or have ever smoked

Questions are asked during the appointment which then determines the next steps. These could include there being no further action required, a referral to your GP for a follow up appointment, or you could be offered a CT scan of your lungs.

Promisingly, the evidence shows that a staggering 76% of the lung cancers found through the programme were at the earliest stages (stages I and II), when more can be done to treat it.  Early detection could be crucial in determining whether the cancer is curable or not.

Sadly, we see too many cases when there have been delays in diagnosing cancer, and it is often terminal by that late diagnosis stage.  The impact is devastating and far reaching, not only on the individual themselves, but on their families and loved ones.

If you or a loved one has suffered an injury due to the negligence of a medical or health professional, including a delay in diagnosis, then we may be able to help you pursue a claim for compensation. Our leading team of medical negligence experts are on hand to offer advice, so please get in touch with us on 0161 696 6165 or complete our online enquiry form and we will contact you directly.
