Stephensons' commercial services in demand

Stephensons Solicitors LLP has experienced an increase in demand for commercial legal advice in the last 12 months, despite the uncertain economic backdrop.

The firm’s Commercial department recorded fee income of £2.75million for the last year.

The department provides legal advice to the region’s small and medium-sized businesses from its bases at Middlebrook in Bolton and Wigan Investment Centre and has this year expanded into London for the first time. There have also been a string of lateral hires and a merger which all contributed to a successful 12 months.

Jonathan Chadwick, managing partner of the Commercial department, said: “This has certainly been our ‘best ever year’ in terms of fee income and the level of new client wins we have secured.

“Despite the struggle many businesses are facing we are weathering the storm. To have made such great strides in fee income during these times is testament to the hard work of an expert team.”

New solicitors to join the department include environmental law expert, Julie Goulbourne, insolvency solicitor Kathryn Maclennan and corporate consultant, Andrew Page, who merged his firm Page & Co with Stephensons in 2012.

Several internal promotions also added to the team’s success. Fraud expert Rachel Adamson, wealth protection solicitor Rob Gore, and commercial litigators, Alistair Gregory and Louise Hebborn, were all promoted to the partnership.

Stephensons offers a partner-led range of commercial legal services to businesses large and small, including litigation, commercial property, construction law, mergers and acquisitions, fraud, professional discipline, environmental law, wealth protection, employment law, debt recovery and corporate recovery and insolvency.

Jonathan Chadwick added: “Our clients appreciate that we offer fixed fee services and added-value offerings including legal helplines and insurance-backed products. We’re a credible alternative to the city centre firms and can compete in terms of price and expertise, as well as being creative and commercial in our approach to our clients’ problems.

“The next 12 months also promises to be a year of growth as we have just opened two bases in London, which will fuel the expansion of our commercial property and litigation work.”
