Woman dies while taking holiday swim with family off the coast of Harris

I was saddened to hear about a lady who sadly died this week while on holiday in the Outer Hebrides.

It has been reported that Rosemary Wickstead, 45, from London was enjoying a holiday with her husband and sons. Mrs Wickstead was said to be swimming with her family at Triagh Mhor beach, off the coast of Harris on Monday evening, when she came into difficulty while swimming.

It is understood that Mrs Wickstead was airlifted to hospital but sadly pronounced dead on arrival. It is also reported that her husband and two of her three sons were also taken to hospital but later released.

Waters near to Triagh Mhor are known to have strong currents and rip tides and some residents have commented that locals avoid swimming their. Carol Collins, of Stornoway Coastguard, said visitors “must seek safety precautions before visiting” as there are currently “no life guards or flag systems in place”.

Hopefully this incident will prompt the local authority to introduce such systems and prevent such a tragic accident happening again.
