On 8th November 2024, the Manchester Christmas Markets opened for another year of festivities. The Christmas Markets always come with large crowds and a busy atmosphere and it’s important to keep safety in mind as you enjoy everything the markets have to offer.
Here are our top tips to ensure you have a safe, enjoyable and incident free visit to the Manchester Markets this year!
Be careful on uneven ground
It's important to be aware of your surroundings as the Christmas Markets attract thousands of visitors each year and therefore it makes some areas very crowded. There may be uneven ground, especially around temporary stalls, ramps and cobbled streets. Be cautious in tight spaces and try to look where you are walking through the busy environment.
Dress for the weather
As the Christmas Markets happen around the winter period, it’s important to dress for the weather. The weather in Manchester can be very unpredictable with rain, wind and ice. Make sure you wear warm layers and shoes that have a good grip to avoid any slips and trips.
Be mindful with food and drinks
One of the highlights of the Christmas Markets is the incredible range of food and drinks that are on offer. However, be mindful of potential hazards when handling hot items. The mulled wine and hot chocolates are always delicious, but they can cause burns if spilt. Check that any drinks with lids are secure and be careful moving through the busy crowds with hot beverages.
Stay alert
Be careful when crossing the road as Manchester’s Christmas Markets are spread across various locations in the city, which means that you might need to cross roads in order to access them. Make sure to pay attention when moving around and try to stick to the designated pedestrian areas. Keep an eye on children when moving around the markets as well due to the visibility being low in the evenings and the amount of people walking around, which can make it difficult to spot vehicles.
Despite everyone’s best efforts to avoid accidents, they can still happen. If you do suffer an injury from an accident that occurred at the Manchester Christmas Markets or any Christmas Markets then you may be entitled to make a claim. The stall owners and event organisers have a duty to ensure visitor safety and they must take reasonable steps to prevent accidents from happening. Make sure you take photographs of the scene, get the details of any witnesses and seek medical attention if necessary.
