Brake, a well-established road safety charity, holds an annual Road Safety Week. This year it takes place from 14th – 20th November 2022. Brake has been holding Road Safety Week since 1997, in the hope of raising awareness and improving safe driving on the roads.
In the year of the introduction of Road Safety Week back in 1997, it was estimated that road traffic accidents were responsible for around 40,000 fatal casualties per year. Now, 25 years later, as the manufacturing of motor vehicles has increased substantially, so has the fatality rate on the roads. Brake estimates that 1.3 million people worldwide now die each year due to road traffic accidents. That’s one person every 24 seconds, which is completely preventable!

How can you as a driver make the roads safer for both pedestrians, other vulnerable road users and your fellow drivers?
- Always follow the speed limit
- Focus on driving and don’t get distracted
- Stay off your mobile phone
- Make sure seatbelts are worn at all times
- Make sure you motor vehicle is up to driving standard
