A man has avoided a prison sentence despite being caught driving his car through a city centre with a wheel missing whilst 3 times over the drink driving limit.
Andrew Mackay, 29, pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol. Bristol Crown Court heard that after leaving a New Year’s Eve party, unemployed Mackay was so drunk that he proceeded to drive some 4 miles without noticing that his nearside front wheel was missing. Police followed Mackay after being alerted by the sparks flying from his car.
Recorder Michael Norman, sentencing Mackay, remarked “The comic aspect of driving a car with 3 wheels is well outweighed by the dangerous aspect of you doing so in a state of inebriation.” Mackay received a three year disqualification from driving and a community order consisting of an unpaid work requirement and a six week curfew.
